A rare and unusual cocktail shaker with hidden ice compartment, England, circa 1930

£495.00

A rare and extremely unusual cocktail shaker made in England in the early part of the 20th century. Of particular interest is the double skinned construction of the shaker. The underside unscrews to reveal a compartment dedicated solely for ice. Once securely closed it allows the user to create the perfect cocktail and pour the drink out as and when they wanted, keeping it cool but without the drink being diluted by the melting ice within the shaker. A clever mechanism for which a patent was applied for as can be seen on the side of the body. It is a truly ingenious mechanism which makes this one of the rarest period shakers on the market.

Just as the prohibition era was lifted in the USA in 1933, it is easy to imagine the appeal behind these objects which would have made wonderful items to wow their guests. This example was made in England around the 1930s and is offered in fantastic condition. The handle gives it the rare if not unique aspect so revered by collectors. As relevant today as it was then, it makes a fantastic conversation piece and wonderful as part of a collection of barware in the modern home.
