A very rare “malle chemise“ or “shirt trunk“ made in France by Goyard in the early part of the 20th century. Over recent years the brand has been relaunched and has taken the world of fashion by storm. The original E. Goyard firm was a trunk maker which rivalled Louis Vuitton and the trunks it made at the time ooze the same quality and finesse as its (now) more famous competitor. Today its trunks are revered as they weren’t made in vast quantities and even fewer have lasted to this day in good condition. This steamer trunk is covered in the famous Goyard chevron canvas, lozine trim and brass fittings make for an ideal investment piece and perfect to embellish any home. What makes this trunk particular is the rarity. It is probably one of the rarest Goyard trunks on the market, the flip down front panel revealing two linen lined pull-out drawers which were used for carry shirts. Although this use is only for te very extravagant today, it is a good solution for a coffee table where the books, drinks or whatever is placed on top of the trunk do not need to be moved to get access to the inside as it doesn’t open in the “traditional“ way. A real collector’s piece, not necessarily a one-off but it would be very difficult to find another, it really does belong in a Goyard museum.

Condition: good overall condition, some rust stains to the interior linen lining, some damage from old travel stickers to the outside of the trunk around the side handle. Structurally the trays are solid but there is a repair to the bottom side of one of them where the canvas has been replaced. Overall structurally sound and looks very good
