A pair of carved emu eggs, Australia, circa 1900

£995.00

An extremely rare pair of Australian carved emu eggs, circa 1900, mounted on a nickel stand shaped as ferns and an ebonised wood base. These artifacts would have been primarily aimed at the tourist market as souvenirs for visitors and are prized today among collectors of “Australiana“ memorabilia. The eggs were often carved with native animals, in this case an emu and a kangaroo, exotic in the eyes of the travelers and a wonderful conversation piece for their drawing room back home. The eggs were very finely carved by hand, extremely fragile and an extremely difficult skill to master.

Condition: exposed nickel would once have been silver plated, otherwise perfect. Please refer to photographs
