A charming and highly decorative child's rocking horse by Collinson of Liverpool, dating to the 1930s and representing one of the finest traditions of British toy manufacture. Renowned for producing some of the most desirable rocking horses of the twentieth century, Collinson combined quality craftsmanship with realistic modelling, creating pieces that were both treasured childhood toys and enduring decorative objects.

The horse is modelled in a spirited standing pose with carved and painted features, retaining its original dapple-grey decoration with black markings, together with a flowing mane and tail. It is fitted with traditional tack including leather bridle, reins, saddle, stirrups, and saddle cloth, all contributing to its authentic equestrian character. The expressive head, carefully painted detailing, and well-proportioned form reflect the high standards of craftsmanship for which Collinson became renowned.

The horse is mounted upon its original stained wooden safety stand, allowing the rocking mechanism to operate within a fixed frame. Introduced as a safer alternative to traditional bow rockers, this design became particularly popular during the early twentieth century and remains closely associated with the finest English rocking horse makers.

Founded in Liverpool in the late nineteenth century, Collinson & Sons established a reputation as one of Britain's premier manufacturers of rocking horses, rivalled only by a handful of specialist makers. Their horses are particularly admired for their robust construction, attractive proportions, and distinctive painted finishes. Today, original Collinson examples are highly sought after by collectors of antique toys, country house furnishings, and decorative interiors.

Possessing considerable nostalgic appeal and decorative presence, this rocking horse serves equally well as a collector's piece, display object, or cherished family heirloom, embodying the craftsmanship and charm of pre-war British toy making.

Condition is good overall and commensurate with age and use. The painted surface displays expected wear, rubbing, craquelure, and minor losses consistent with decades of enjoyment. The leather tack shows age-related wear, while the timber stand remains sturdy and functional. The horse retains excellent colour and character and presents very attractively overall.
