A lovely and varied collection of fifteen Victorian silhouettes depicting various characters in Victorian dress, some with inscriptions on the reverse describing the sitters as Cornelius Johnson, HRH Prince Arthur, J. Severn Walker and Christian Drake, also including a full length silhouette of a boy holding a bag, a group of musicians, and a Victorian family.

Silhouettes were very popular during the Victorian era and earlier. They held an important function as they were the main way that common people could have a portrait made. In many ways it was the pre-cursor to photography. Invented around 1790, they were at their most popular for the 50 or so years after, right through tot he Victorian era when their demise was largely down to the invention of the photographic camera.

Condition: some re-backed, a few yellowing, overall in moderately good condition.
