A floor standing metal globe by Paravia, Italy, 1960s
A vintage free standing terrestrial globe presented on a tall metal base with brass meridian ring hardware and a turned tapered column finished in dark burgundy. The printed paper gores display physical global relief in light aqua seas and ochre / tan land masses, with charismatic mid–century modern academic styling, light cartographic fade, and beautifully warm natural ageing. A highly sculptural presence is created by the height, the column slenderness, and the circular disc plinth massing, reading almost architectural in silhouette. A highly desirable decorative object suitable for libraries, studios, galleries, high end book rooms, and Milanese modernist interiors, where the colour palette reads extremely knowingly 1950s / 60s Italian modern.
Paravia was one of the most respected and influential Italian educational publishers and cartographic makers of the 20th century, producing globes and atlases for the most prestigious lyceums, universities, and national institutional schools. Paravia production was unusually exacting in detail and remains recognisable for graphic restraint, highly competent colour separation, and beautifully balanced physical terrain. Paravia globes from the period have now become a specialist collectible category — and represent one of the canonical Italian industrial educational objects of the post war modern period.
Manufactured in Italy in the 1960s by Paravia and now extremely scarce in this scale and free standing floor form factor, with elegant metal base construction and original brass hardware. An exceptionally authentic example of Italian mid century cartographic industrial design, and a genuinely superb piece of decorative interior language for serious collectors and connoisseurs.
Condition: some damage across “the Pacific ocean” and “North America” possibly due to sticky tape being used, otherwise in good decorative order, mechanism working well. Please refer to photographs
