A massive boardroom model of an AVRO RJ, England, mid 1990s
An massive and impressive boardroom model of a British Aerospace 146 /Avro RJ, made out of softwood and plaster or fibreglass and displayed on a purpose-built stand. Made in the mid 1990s, this imposing model was produced to commemorate the association between the United Kingdom and Malaysia to jointly manufacture this unique and innovative aircraft. This particular model probably stood in a lobby or boardroom of British aerospace headquarters to celebrate and advertise its partnership with Khazanah Nasional, the Sovereign National Wealth Fund of the Malaysian Government. Of lovely proportions, the model is an eye-catching model that makes a lovely decorative conversation piece for collectors of aircraft memorabilia.
The BAe 146 was a world leader in modern aircraft manufacturing; known as the Whisperjet it was a short-haul airliner re known for fuel efficiency and noise reduction, long before most other commercial aircraft.
394 if these aircraft were built and operated throughout the world from 1983. An arrangement between BAe and Khazanah Nasional of Malaysia was made to open a production line in Malaya, but the deal collapsed in 1997. It would not be unreasonable to believe that this extraordinary model is the last vestige of this abandoned collaboration.
On the 29th June 1994, a BA146 over around the runway and suffered damages while trying to land at Islay Airport In the inner Hebrides. The incident is notable because the van Prince Charles was at the controls but was not blamed because, despite being a license pilot, he was a passenger who was invited to fly the aircraft. Following this incident, Prince Charles forwent flying Royal flights.
Condition: some scraping to the livery, some old repairs and chips to the bodywork. Overall good vintage condition, please refer to photographs.
