A collection of three plaster portrait reliefs from the family of Riccardo Secchi (1871–1938), Italy, early 20th century
An interesting collection of three Italian plaster portrait reliefs, acquired from the family home of direct descendants of the sculptor Riccardo Secchi (1871–1938), dating from the early 20th century.
The collection comprises two circular reliefs and one oval relief, each depicting a different sitter. The largest circular relief portrays a young woman with softly modelled features and swept-up hair, shown in three-quarter view and wearing a delicate necklace and draped garment. This example bears the signature of Riccardo Secchi, providing a direct connection to the artist.
The second circular relief depicts a distinguished gentleman in profile, with a prominent moustache and formal jacket. The oval relief portrays a bearded gentleman wearing a broad-brimmed hat, believed to represent Prampolini, although the sitter's identity remains unconfirmed. The authorship of the oval portrait is also uncertain, and it is therefore offered as part of the collection associated with Secchi rather than definitively attributed to him.
Riccardo Secchi (1871–1938) was an Italian sculptor celebrated for his portraiture, commemorative sculptures and public monuments. Working primarily during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he became known for his expressive and naturalistic modelling, particularly in his depictions of prominent historical and cultural figures. His works include several important public monuments in Italy, notably in Reggio Emilia, reflecting his reputation as a sculptor of considerable technical skill and artistic sensitivity.
The three reliefs retain their aged plaster surfaces, with variations in colour, texture and finish. The oval portrait is housed within an antique moulded wooden frame, while the two circular reliefs are unframed.
Provenance: Acquired from the family home of direct descendants of Riccardo Secchi.
Condition: in good to fair antique condition, with surface wear, discolouration, chips and losses to the plaster consistent with age. The circular portrait of the gentleman has a hairline crack extending through the plaster. The oval wooden frame displays wear and losses to its finish. Please refer to photographs.
Dimensions of largest: 54cm diameter, 5cm deep; dimensions of oval: 42cm wide, 53cm high, 5cm deep
