An Art Deco style sheepskin leather tub chair, Holland, late 20th century

£995.00

Showing superb patina and colour, this wonderful club chair was hand upholstered sheepskin leather in Holland by the finest craftsmen. With a rich tan colour leather, this particular model could well be a one-off. The chair has been constructed with an Art Deco frame, its elegant clean straight lines it make a wonderfully striking item of furniture. Although it does show a fair amount of wear and tear, it does not detract from its “shabby-chic“ appeal and would look wonderful in any interior, both modern and traditional.

The design and craftsmanship of sheep leather furniture was perfected in Holland and spread to other countries in northern Europe. In terms of construction, the framework for sofas and chairs were initially constructed in mahogany, the preferred hard wood, and then upholstered in 100% natural sheep leather. This type of hide was carefully chosen and preferred over cow leather because of its durability and uniqueness, giving each piece a lovely rich and buttery patina.

By the end of the 19th century a small number of designs became classics, repeated over and over again with individual “twists” incorporated by designers and manufacturers. These subtle twists can be seen through variations in the sizes, the material selection, and even the invisible interior construction. The hand made construction and the quality of the materials renders every chair or sofa a true work of art as opposed to a simple piece of furniture.

Condition: a fair amount of wear, scuffing all over, particularly to the black piping. Overall good vintage condition, no rips or tears to the leather. Please refer to photographs.
