A pair of lacquered wood and agate side tables by Willy Daro, Belgium, circa 1970

£2,495.00

A rare pair of side tables by Willy Daro, made in Belgium around the 1970s. As is so characteristic of Willy Daro, he incorporates in these side table his trademark minerals, in this case a slice of agate surrounded by a thick brass border. The tables are finished with a thick beige coloured lacquer which really does bring these items to a level of innovative design that looks as contemporary today it would have done half a century ago. Both pieces signed to the border.

Willy Daro owned Les Nouveaux Ateliers Willy Daro and worked in Brussels from the late 1960s to 1987. His pieces are fabulous examples of an eccentric, modern and bold style. He is particularly well known today for his lamps and furniture, where he often combined brass and chrome with large natural materials such as agate, semi-precious stones, coral and shells, or botanical and floral sculptural forms. The designs from the 1970s combined the Brutalist style with fossils and minerals. Daro’s designs were sophisticated, with luxurious materials and great attention to detail, making each item a unique sculptural piece of art.

Condition: overall vey good vintage condition, both tables so minor blemishes and signs of wear, most notably a small chip to one of the corners about half a centimetre in diameter. Please refer to photographs.
