A metal and paper floor lamp by Ingo Maurer, Germany, 1990s
A sculptural floor lamp constructed around a circular metal wire sphere containing crumpled white paper elements, presented on a tall slender stem with circular base. The object reads as a conceptual light sculpture rather than conventional lighting, and the air and void through the structure are as important formally as the material mass. Decorative impact is very high because it creates a floating cloud volume that feels almost performative within a room.
Ingo Maurer work sits in the critical German poetic and experimental lighting tradition, where light is treated as emotional, narrative and immaterial rather than merely utilitarian. The lamp is from the first run of production and is now out of production which significantly elevates desirability and collectability for serious lighting collectors. Architectural contemporary interiors, postmodern spaces, and serious collector rooms take this extremely well because the sculptural behaviour of light is expected rather than simply accepted.
