A handsome pair of sheepskin leather tub chairs manufactured in Holland in the late 20th century. These generously proportioned armchairs feature a classic barrel-back form with deep, enveloping curves that provide both comfort and visual presence.
Upholstered in warm tan sheepskin leather, the chairs have developed a rich natural patina over time, enhancing their character and depth of colour. The rolled arms are accentuated with decorative brass stud detailing, adding a traditional touch that contrasts beautifully with the otherwise clean, rounded silhouette.
Each chair is raised on simple, tapered wooden legs, allowing the substantial curved body to remain the focal point. The combination of supple leather, traditional craftsmanship, and understated Dutch design makes these chairs versatile pieces suited to both contemporary and classic interiors.
The design and craftsmanship of sheep leather furniture was perfected in Holland and spread to other countries in northern Europe. In terms of construction, the framework for sofas and chairs were initially constructed in mahogany, the preferred hard wood, and then upholstered in 100% natural sheep leather. This type of hide was carefully chosen and preferred over cow leather because of its durability and uniqueness, giving each piece a lovely rich and buttery patina.
By the end of the 19th century a small number of designs became classics, repeated over and over again with individual “twists” incorporated by designers and manufacturers. These subtle twists can be seen through variations in the sizes, the material selection, and even the invisible interior construction. The hand made construction and the quality of the materials renders every chair or sofa a true work of art as opposed to a simple piece of furniture.
Condition: good vintage condition with age-related wear, creasing, and patina to the leather consistent with use. Structurally sound and comfortable. Please refer to photographs.
