The Netherlands became renowned for perfecting the craft of sheepskin leather upholstery, a tradition that gradually influenced makers across Northern Europe. Typically constructed with a solid hardwood frame (often in mahogany, prized for its strength and stability) these pieces were then upholstered in 100% natural sheepskin leather. This type of hide was specifically chosen over cowhide for its superior softness, resilience, and the beautifully distinctive patina it developed over time. By the close of the 19th century, a select group of sofa and chair designs had become enduring classics, reinterpreted time and again by various workshops.
