An Anglo-Indian carved teak and cane settee, India, circa 1910
A handsome Anglo-Indian carved teak and cane settee dating from the early 20th century, combining richly carved timber with particularly decorative hand-woven cane work.
The double back is formed from two striking circular radiating cane panels, each centred by a turned teak boss and surrounded by intricate concentric weaving. Further cane panels are incorporated into the sides beneath the shaped armrests, while the solid teak frame is embellished with carved foliate and scrolling decoration.
The shaped crest rail and apron are punctuated by carved floral motifs, the whole raised on short carved legs terminating in stylised paw feet. The warm colour and grain of the teak contrast beautifully with the finely worked cane, creating a particularly decorative example of Anglo-Indian furniture from the period.
The seat and loose back cushions have been later upholstered in a neutral fabric, providing a sympathetic contrast to the original teak and cane structure.
Condition: in good antique condition with wear, marks and variations in colour consistent with age and use. The cushions and upholstery are later replacements. Please refer to photographs.
