£1,695.00

A highly decorative Dutch sterling silver figural wager cup, bearing English import marks for London, dated 1911. This striking and unusual piece is modelled in the form of a richly dressed female figure in Renaissance revival style, standing and supporting a twin-handled bowl above her head.

The figure is finely cast and chased, wearing an elaborately detailed gown adorned with scrolling foliate motifs and engraved ornament, reflecting the continued European fascination with historical revival styles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her outstretched arms support a circular bowl with applied handles, the interior and exterior decorated with further engraved detailing. The composition is both sculptural and functional, making it an impressive and theatrical table piece.

Wager cups have a long tradition in European drinking culture, originally used in convivial settings where participants would undertake a “wager” or challenge, typically to drink the contents without spilling. Many examples were designed with unusual forms or multiple elements to make the act of drinking both difficult and entertaining. While original wager cups date to the 16th and 17th centuries, revival examples such as this were produced in the 19th and early 20th centuries as decorative conversation pieces, evoking historic drinking customs.

Although Dutch in origin, this example carries English import hallmarks, including the lion passant for sterling silver and the London assay mark, along with the date letter “q” for 1911. The presence of these marks indicates that the piece was imported into Britain and assayed for sale on the English market. An additional “Rd” mark suggests a registered design, reinforcing its early 20th-century manufacture.

Such imported pieces were often of high quality, produced by skilled continental silversmiths and adapted for the British market, combining European craftsmanship with English hallmarking standards. A rare and visually striking example of a revivalist wager cup, combining Dutch craftsmanship, English import history, and theatrical design—ideal for collectors of unusual silver and ceremonial drinking vessels.

Condition: good antique condition with light surface wear consistent with age and use. The silver remains bright with minor scratches and handling marks. Hallmarks are clear and legible. Please refer to photographs.
