A silver plated mounted crocodile leather hip flask, England, circa 1900
A handsome silver plated mounted crocodile leather hip flask dating to the late 19th to early 20th century. The flask of rounded rectangular form is covered in richly textured crocodile skin, displaying a deep brown tone and attractive natural patterning, with a detachable silver plated cup forming the base and a hinged screw cap to the top.
The proportions are particularly pleasing, with softly curved shoulders and a well-balanced form designed to sit comfortably in the pocket. The tactile quality and distinctive scale pattern of the crocodile leather elevate the piece beyond the standard, giving it a more luxurious and visually striking character. The bright silver plated mounts provide an elegant contrast, while also offering practical function through the removable drinking cup and secure closure.
The hinged cap remains attached to the collar, a thoughtful feature typical of quality flasks of the period, preventing loss during use. The interior retains its original lining for spirits, and the base cup unscrews smoothly.
Such flasks were popular accessories in the late Victorian and Edwardian period, associated with travel, field sports, and gentlemanly pursuits, combining utility with understated refinement. A refined and practical example of a period hip flask, distinguished by its crocodile leather covering, ideal for collectors or use.
Condition: good antique condition with light wear consistent with age and use. The crocodile leather shows an attractive patina with minor surface marks, and the silver plated mounts display light scratches and some rubbing consistent with age. The hinge and cap function well, and the cup screws on securely.
