A Louis Vuitton cabin trunk in orange Vuittonite canvas, France, circa 1905

£7,495.00

A classic early 20th-century Louis Vuitton cabin trunk, executed in vibrant orange Vuittonite canvas with solid wood edging, reinforced leather trim, and brass hardware. Designed for shorter journeys and cabin use, this compact yet substantial trunk reflects Vuitton’s mastery of practical luxury, combining durability with refined craftsmanship. The interior retains its original light fabric lining and fitted removable tray, offering both storage and display appeal. The warm patina and visible signs of travel add to its authenticity and character.

Founded in Paris in 1854, Louis Vuitton revolutionised travel with the introduction of flat-topped trunks that could be easily stacked, replacing the domed shapes previously in use. Vuitton’s designs quickly became synonymous with innovation, quality, and elegance, serving an elite clientele during the golden age of travel.

By the turn of the 20th century, Louis Vuitton had established itself as the leading maker of luxury luggage, with specialised canvases such as Vuittonite developed for strength, water resistance, and longevity. These early trunks were handcrafted to withstand steamship crossings, railway journeys, and the emerging age of automobile travel, making surviving examples highly sought after today.

Condition: overall good antique condition with visible surface wear, scuffs, and marks consistent with age and extensive use. The canvas shows areas of patina and small losses, the leather trim is worn but stable, and the brass hardware retains its original character. Interior lining shows signs of age and use.
