A Louis Vuitton gown trunk, France, circa 1930

£19,995.00

An exceptionally rare Louis Vuitton malle penderie (gown trunk), circa 1910. Of monumental proportions, standing at an impressive 140cm, this wardrobe trunk was specially designed for the transport of gowns and fine garments. It is finished in the iconic Louis Vuitton monogram canvas, with rich leather trim and brass hardware, and remains in excellent condition for its age. Remarkably versatile, it can also be laid horizontally to serve as an oversized coffee table — a striking statement piece and a guaranteed conversation starter in any interior.

Louis Vuitton’s Paris atelier, established in 1854, quickly became synonymous with innovation, refinement, and the glamour of luxury travel. By the Belle Époque era, Vuitton’s clientele included European aristocracy, celebrated performers, and haute couture maisons, who commissioned bespoke trunks tailored to their wardrobes and lifestyles. The malle penderie was one of the most prestigious designs of this period, allowing gowns to be transported upright and wrinkle-free.

Today, examples of Vuitton’s early 20th-century wardrobe trunks are exceedingly scarce, particularly in such imposing size and condition. As a result, they are highly prized by collectors worldwide, both as functional works of art and as historical artefacts embodying the golden age of travel. With its scale, rarity, and provenance, this trunk represents not only a decorative centrepiece of extraordinary presence, but also an astute investment in one of the most enduring and desirable names in luxury design.
