A Louis Vuitton “malle haute” trunk in damier canvas, France, circa 1900
A classic Louis Vuitton malle haute trunk, dating to around 1900 and covered in the house’s iconic damier canvas. Designed for extended travel, the tall format provided generous storage while remaining robust enough to withstand long journeys by rail and sea. The trunk retains its original brass hardware, wooden slats and interior lining, all characteristic of Louis Vuitton’s early craftsmanship and attention to detail. The damier canvas, introduced in the late 19th century, was both practical and instantly recognisable, making it one of the firm’s most enduring signatures.
Louis Vuitton was founded in Paris in 1854 by Louis Vuitton, who revolutionised travel luggage by creating flat-topped trunks that were lightweight, stackable and waterproof, a radical departure from the domed trunks of the period. His innovations quickly earned the patronage of an elite international clientele, and the company became synonymous with modern travel, quality materials and meticulous construction.
By the turn of the 20th century, Louis Vuitton trunks had become the benchmark for luxury travel, accompanying explorers, aristocrats and fashionable travellers across the globe. Patterns such as damier and later the monogram canvas were developed both as design statements and as protection against imitation. Early examples such as this malle haute are now highly sought after, valued not only for their aesthetic presence but also as tangible symbols of the golden age of travel.
Condition: overall good antique condition with wear, scuffs and marks consistent with age and extensive use. The canvas shows areas of rubbing and patina, and the interior displays age-related discolouration. Lacking trays and keys. Please refer to photographs
