A Louis Vuitton courier trunk in natural cow hide, France, circa 1900
A rare and highly desirable all-leather Louis Vuitton trunk dating to circa 1900, crafted in richly patinated cowhide. Unlike the more commonly seen canvas examples, this trunk is entirely covered in leather, giving it a deeper warmth, remarkable surface character, and a beautifully aged finish developed over more than a century.
The exterior displays a superb, time-earned patina with natural variations in tone, scuffs, and creases that speak to its history of travel. Brass locks, reinforced corner mounts, and side handles remain in keeping with Louis Vuitton’s early 20th-century construction standards. The solid brass central lock and clasps retain their period character, complementing the warm tones of the leather.
The interior is lined in the original light canvas and retains its removable fitted trays. The lid is quilted and padded in the traditional Vuitton manner, designed to protect contents during transit. The interior label reads Louis Vuitton, 1 Rue Scribe, Paris – 149 New Bond St, London, helping to date the trunk to the late 19th or very early 20th century.
This example represents the height of Vuitton’s early craftsmanship. Practical, refined, built for serious travel, and increasingly difficult to source in full leather form.
Founded in Paris in 1854, Louis Vuitton began as a maker of high-quality travelling trunks, quickly earning a reputation for innovation and craftsmanship. Vuitton revolutionised luggage design by introducing flat-topped trunks, which were lighter, more practical, and easier to stack than the domed trunks commonly used at the time. These advances, combined with meticulous construction and durable materials, made Vuitton trunks the preferred choice of aristocrats, explorers, and international travellers.
By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Louis Vuitton had become synonymous with luxury travel. The introduction of the now-iconic monogram canvas in 1896 helped combat counterfeiting while establishing a visual identity that remains instantly recognisable today. Early trunks, particularly rare functional models such as wardrobe, library, and secretaire trunks, are now among the most collectible luxury objects of their era, prized for both their history and their exceptional craftsmanship.
Condition: good antique condition. Exterior leather shows age-related wear, scuffs, and surface marks consistent with over 100 years of use, contributing to its character. Interior clean and structurally sound. Deep scratch to lack and front panel of the trunk. Please refer to photographs.
