A Bay Keramik floor vase, West Germany, circa 1960s–1970s
A striking and large-scale Bay Keramik floor vase dating to the 1960s–1970s, exemplifying the bold forms and experimental glazing techniques that established West German ceramics as some of the most distinctive decorative arts of the post-war period. Standing an impressive 52cm in height, the vase possesses a commanding sculptural presence and makes a dramatic decorative statement.
The tall baluster-form body is decorated with vivid bands of fiery red and orange lava glaze, contrasted by heavily textured black volcanic-style bands that encircle the vessel. The dramatic colour combination creates a powerful visual effect, while the richly textured surface provides exceptional depth and tactile appeal. The lower section is finished in a deep brown glaze with finely incised horizontal banding, creating a harmonious balance between form and decoration.
Produced by Bay Keramik, one of the leading West German pottery manufacturers of the twentieth century, the vase reflects the company's embrace of innovative glazing techniques and bold modern design. Founded in the 1930s and flourishing during the post-war decades, Bay Keramik became particularly well known for its highly decorative "fat lava" ceramics, characterised by vibrant colours, textured surfaces, and expressive sculptural forms. Today, the firm's work remains highly sought after by collectors of mid-century and studio ceramics.
The glaze is particularly characteristic of the celebrated fat lava aesthetic, with the heavily textured black bands creating a volcanic appearance that contrasts beautifully with the luminous red and orange ground. The combination of scale, colour, and texture makes this an outstanding example of West German ceramic design.
Equally effective as a standalone decorative object or as a vessel for large-scale floral arrangements, the vase embodies the bold artistic spirit of the period and remains highly relevant within contemporary interiors.
Condition is excellent overall, with no chips, cracks, or restorations observed. The glaze remains vibrant and well preserved, and the vase displays exceptionally well. Please refer to the photographs.
