A Scheurich floor vase, West Germany, circa 1960s–1970s

£395.00

A striking large-scale Scheurich floor vase dating to the 1960s–1970s, exemplifying the bold forms and innovative glazing techniques that made West German ceramics highly influential during the post-war period. Standing an impressive 54cm high, the vase possesses a strong architectural presence and serves as an exceptional decorative statement piece.

The cylindrical body is decorated with alternating bands of vivid red lava glaze and heavily textured dark volcanic-style glaze, creating a dramatic interplay of colour, texture, and depth. These richly modelled horizontal bands wrap around the vessel, accentuating its substantial scale and producing a powerful visual rhythm. The upper and lower sections are finished in a speckled cream glaze, providing an effective contrast to the vibrant central decoration and highlighting the vase's elegant proportions.

Produced by Scheurich Keramik, one of the largest and most successful West German ceramic manufacturers of the twentieth century, the vase reflects the company's embrace of the celebrated "fat lava" aesthetic. During the 1960s and 1970s, Scheurich became renowned for its bold decorative wares, combining sculptural forms with experimental glazes that remain highly sought after by collectors today.

The heavily textured lava bands are particularly characteristic of the period, creating a tactile volcanic surface that contrasts beautifully with the glossy red glaze. The combination of scale, colour, and surface treatment makes this an excellent example of mid-century West German ceramic design.

Equally suited as a standalone decorative object or as a vessel for large-scale floral arrangements, the vase embodies the confident and expressive design language that has made Scheurich ceramics enduringly popular with collectors and interior designers alike.

Condition is excellent overall, with no chips, cracks, or restorations observed. The glaze remains vibrant and well preserved, and the vase displays exceptionally well. Please refer to the photographs.
