An unusual Scottish table snuff mull dating from the 19th century, fashioned from a naturally curved cow horn and mounted with dark patinated Britannia metal fittings.

The wide end is fitted with a substantial hinged circular cover, decorated with beaded borders and surmounted by a recumbent hound finial. The horn is supported on an elaborate cast metal mount modelled with an animal head and outstretched legs, creating a wonderfully sculptural appearance while allowing the mull to stand securely on a table.

Table snuff mulls were larger counterparts to personal pocket snuff boxes and were intended to be passed amongst guests in a domestic or convivial setting. Scottish examples were frequently fashioned from cattle horn, with the natural form of the material incorporated into increasingly imaginative mounts and decoration.

Condition: in good antique condition with wear, marks and patination consistent with age and use. Please refer to photographs.
