A framed Mbuti barkcloth painting, Democratic Republic of the Congo, mid-20th century
An attractive barkcloth painting by the Mbuti peoples of the Ituri Forest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, dating from the mid-20th century.
Made from beaten tree bark, the textile is decorated with a rhythmic arrangement of vertical black lines intersected by numerous short horizontal strokes, creating a striking series of ladder-like geometric motifs. The hand-painted decoration contrasts beautifully with the natural warm beige tones and fibrous texture of the barkcloth, while subtle irregularities in the pattern reflect its handmade character.
Barkcloth paintings form an important part of the artistic traditions of the Mbuti peoples, traditionally produced using bark prepared by beating it into a flexible sheet. The surfaces were decorated with natural pigments, often applied using simple implements, to create abstract compositions of lines, dots and geometric forms. These designs are frequently associated with the rhythms, patterns and natural environment of the Ituri Forest.
The surviving textile retains its irregular edges and richly textured surface and is presented mounted against a pale background within a simple white-painted wooden frame.
Condition: In good vintage condition, with age-related wear, creasing, discolouration and minor losses to the barkcloth, consistent with age and use. The frame shows some surface wear and marks. Please refer to photographs.
Dimensions: 91cm high, 63cm wide, 5cm deep
