A framed Mbuti barkcloth painting, Democratic Republic of the Congo, mid-20th century

£695.00

An attractive barkcloth painting by the Mbuti peoples of the Ituri Forest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, dating from the mid-20th century.

Made from beaten tree bark, the textile is decorated with an intricate arrangement of abstract geometric motifs painted in dark pigment against a warm terracotta-coloured ground. The composition incorporates interlocking angular forms, curved lines and groups of closely spaced parallel strokes, creating a lively, rhythmic pattern across the surface. The subtle variations in the hand-painted decoration and the natural texture of the barkcloth lend the piece a distinctive organic quality.

Barkcloth paintings form an important part of the artistic traditions of the Mbuti peoples, traditionally produced using bark prepared by beating it into a flexible sheet. The surfaces were decorated with natural pigments, often applied using simple implements, to create abstract compositions of lines, dots and geometric forms. These designs are frequently associated with the rhythms, patterns and natural environment of the Ituri Forest.

The surviving textile retains its irregular edges, natural creases and richly textured surface. It is presented mounted against a pale background within a simple light wood frame, allowing the warm colour and intricate decoration of the barkcloth to stand out.

Condition: In good vintage condition, with age-related wear, creasing, discolouration and minor losses to the barkcloth, consistent with age and use. The frame shows some surface wear and marks. Please refer to photographs.

Dimensions: 112cm high, 69cm wide, 5cm deep
