A pair of antique ceramic hand warmers, Italy, late 19th century

£250.00

A charming pair of authentic antique Italian scaldini (portable braziers or hand warmers), dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.

Handcrafted in glazed earthenware, these traditional Italian warming vessels were once used throughout rural homes before the advent of central heating. Hot embers or charcoal would be placed inside the bowl, allowing the scaldino to be carried by its sturdy handle to warm hands, feet, beds and living spaces during the colder months.

This complementary pair showcases two distinct decorative styles. One features a rich dark brown glaze with a scalloped rim and twisted body, while the second is finished in a deep emerald green glaze with elaborate raised floral, foliate and scrollwork decoration. The green example is the more decorative and unusual of the two, making this a particularly attractive matched display pair despite their differing forms and finishes. Together they offer a wonderful glimpse into everyday Italian domestic life and regional pottery traditions.

Today, these pieces make striking decorative objects and can be repurposed in a variety of ways around the home. Their sculptural forms work beautifully as planters for herbs or succulents, decorative cachepots, utensil holders, dried flower displays, or simply as standalone statement pieces within a rustic farmhouse, Mediterranean or country-house interior.

Condition: both pieces are in good antique condition, consistent with age and use. Green scaldino displays areas of glaze wear and minor losses to the raised decoration. Brown scaldino retains a strong glossy glaze with age-related surface wear and small imperfections typical of handmade pottery. Please refer to photographs.

Dimensions: 24cm high, 15cm diameter (green)
