An impressive Italian plaster portrait bust of an unidentified gentleman, attributed to the sculptor Riccardo Secchi.

The bust depicts a distinguished, mature gentleman with swept-back hair, a prominent curled moustache and a stern, contemplative expression. He wears a formal jacket with broad lapels, a waistcoat and an elaborate neckcloth, all modelled with considerable attention to detail.

The sculpture is inscribed “ARIOSTO” to one side, although the identity of the sitter remains unconfirmed.

Riccardo Secchi (1871–1938) was an Italian sculptor celebrated for his portraiture, commemorative sculptures and public monuments. Working primarily during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, he became known for his expressive and naturalistic modelling, particularly in his depictions of prominent historical and cultural figures. His works include several important public monuments in Italy, notably in Reggio Emilia, reflecting his reputation as a sculptor of considerable technical skill and artistic sensitivity.

The plaster retains an attractive aged surface, with subtle variations in colour and texture that emphasise the expressive modelling.
