A plaster portrait bust of Marshal Pietro Badoglio (1871–1956), attributed to Riccardo Secchi (1871–1938), Italy, 1930s
An imposing Italian plaster portrait bust depicting Marshal Pietro Badoglio, one of the most prominent Italian military figures of the early 20th century, attributed to the sculptor Riccardo Secchi.
The bust portrays Badoglio in military uniform, with a closely cropped head, distinctive facial features and a decorated tunic. The sculpture is modelled with considerable attention to the sitter's likeness, particularly the facial expression and the folds and detailing of the uniform.
Pietro Badoglio (1871–1956) was an Italian general who was appointed Marshal of Italy in 1926. He served as Chief of the General Staff and later became head of the Italian government following the removal of Benito Mussolini in July 1943.
The bust is attributed to Riccardo Secchi (1871–1938), an Italian sculptor recognised for his portraiture and public monuments. As Secchi died in 1938, an original model by the artist would necessarily date from before Badoglio's appointment as prime minister.
An interesting example of Italian interwar commemorative sculpture, combining a historically significant subject with expressive portrait modelling.
