A set of three antique ceramic hand warmers, Italy, late 19th century
A beautiful collection of three antique Italian “scaldini” (portable braziers or hand warmers), dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.
Finished in rich brown glazes ranging from warm chestnut to deep chocolate tones, each piece displays its own unique form and character while complementing the others perfectly as a decorative grouping. Featuring classic arched handles and footed bases, these scaldini embody the rustic elegance of rural Italian life.
Traditionally used throughout northern Italy during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the scaldini were filled with hot embers or charcoal and carried by their handles to provide warmth around the home before the widespread adoption of modern heating. Practical yet beautifully crafted, they were everyday household essentials, particularly in countryside homes during the colder months.
Today, this charming trio lends itself beautifully to decorative use. Their sculptural silhouettes and warm earthy tones make them ideal as herb planters in a kitchen, decorative pots for aromatic plants on a terrace or patio, or characterful containers for succulents and seasonal displays. Equally at home indoors or outdoors, they bring a touch of Italian farmhouse charm to shelves, windowsills, garden rooms, conservatories and rustic interiors.
Whether displayed together as a collection or styled individually throughout the home, they offer a wonderful blend of history, craftsmanship and practical decorative appeal.
Condition: All three scaldini are in very good antique condition, displaying expected signs of age and use consistent with their history. Please refer to photographs.
Dimensions: 26cm high, 17cm diameter (largest)
