A Victorian child's concealed witch-protection boot and stockings, discovered in Colchester in 1974

A Victorian child's concealed witch-protection boot and stockings, discovered in Colchester in 1974
An unusual and fascinating example of British folk history, comprising a Victorian child's leather boot and a pair of striped stockings, discovered concealed within a chimney at 39 East Street, Colchester, in 1974.
The small, heavily worn leather lace-up boot is displayed alongside a pair of striped stockings, arranged in a crossed formation. The objects are mounted against a deep red fabric backing within a glazed display case, retaining their original presentation and an accompanying label documenting their discovery.
The original label reads:
"100 YEARS OLD,
FOUND IN CHIMNEY OF
No. 39 EAST ST.
BELIEVED TO KEEP OUT
WITCHES.
Colchester 1974."
The practice of concealing shoes and other personal possessions within the fabric of buildings was a longstanding tradition in British folk magic. Such objects were often hidden in chimneys, walls, beneath floorboards or near fireplaces, where they were believed to protect the household against witches, evil spirits and misfortune. Worn shoes were considered particularly potent because of their close association with the person who had worn them.
The label is especially interesting as it records not only the precise location and year of discovery, but also the protective purpose traditionally associated with the objects. Described as approximately 100 years old when discovered in 1974, the boot and stockings can be dated to around 1874, during the Victorian period.
An evocative and well-documented survival of British domestic superstition, offering a tangible connection to the protective rituals and beliefs of the 19th century.
England, circa 1870–1880. Discovered in Colchester, Essex, in 1974.
Condition: in good antique condition, with considerable age-related wear, deterioration and losses to the leather boot and stockings, consistent with their age and prolonged concealment. The glazed display case shows surface wear, marks and some deterioration to the interior backing. Please refer to photographs.
