A framed Kuba ncák ceremonial raffia textile fragment, Democratic Republic of the Congo, early 20th century

£595.00

A finely worked raffia textile fragment by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, most likely originating from an ncák ceremonial wrapper, dating from the early 20th century.

Constructed from joined panels of handwoven raffia fibre, the textile is decorated with an exceptionally subtle arrangement of linear and geometric motifs worked tonally across the dark brown ground. The composition incorporates intersecting lines, cross-hatching, chevrons and angular geometric forms, creating a complex pattern that becomes increasingly apparent on closer inspection.

Ncák textiles formed part of the elaborate ceremonial dress traditions of the Kuba and were constructed from multiple woven raffia panels, frequently embellished using a variety of embroidery, appliqué and related decorative techniques. These textiles were important expressions of status, wealth and artistic identity, reflecting the exceptional weaving traditions of the Kuba peoples.

The surviving fragment retains its irregular edges and richly textured surface, revealing the character of the original handwoven material. It is presented mounted against a pale ground within a simple wooden frame, allowing the intricate patterns and natural variations of the raffia to be appreciated.

Condition: in good antique condition, with age-related wear, fading, minor losses and irregularities to the raffia consistent with age and use. Please refer to photographs.

Dimensions: 103cm high, 63cm wide, 5cm deep
