The atmospheric composition depicts a tranquil stretch of the Thames, with small boats resting along the riverbank and densely wooded banks framing the water beyond. The scene is constructed from carefully selected and cut veneers of contrasting timbers, with the natural colours and grain of the woods ingeniously employed to suggest foliage, shadows, reflections and the changing light across the landscape. The pale central passage of water is particularly effective, capturing the reflected light of the setting sun.

Albert James Rowley (1875–1944) founded the Rowley Gallery in Kensington, London, with his wife Emma in 1898. The gallery became particularly celebrated for its distinctive inlaid wood pictures, combining traditional marquetry craftsmanship with contemporary artistic design. Works produced by the gallery were collaborative in nature: designs could be supplied by Rowley himself or by associated artists, while skilled craftsmen translated them into carefully composed veneers. For this reason, works bearing the Rowley Gallery label are most appropriately catalogued as productions of the gallery unless a particular designer is specifically identified.
