A scheurich handled floor vase, West Germany, circa 1960s–1970s
A striking Scheurich handled floor vase dating to the 1960s–1970s, exemplifying the bold decorative aesthetic and innovative glazing techniques that made West German ceramics internationally celebrated during the post-war period. Combining strong sculptural form with a vibrant and highly distinctive surface treatment, the vase is a fine example of the experimental approach adopted by German ceramic manufacturers during the era.
The vase is of elongated baluster form with a narrow cylindrical neck and elegantly curved loop handle. The lower section is finished in a textured charcoal-brown glaze, providing a restrained foundation for the dramatic upper body. The central section is decorated with a vivid red ground overlaid with a striking black tartan or plaid-style pattern, creating an eye-catching graphic effect that is both playful and unmistakably of its period.
Produced by Scheurich Keramik, one of the largest and most successful West German pottery manufacturers of the twentieth century, the vase reflects the company's willingness to embrace bold colour combinations and unconventional decorative motifs. While many West German ceramics are celebrated for their lava glazes, Scheurich also produced a wide variety of highly decorative designs, often drawing inspiration from contemporary fashion and graphic design trends.
The unusual tartan-style decoration distinguishes this example from more commonly encountered models and gives it a particularly strong decorative presence. The combination of the vivid red glaze, contrasting black pattern, and sculptural handled form results in a vase that functions equally well as a decorative object or as a vessel for floral arrangements.
Condition is excellent overall, with no chips, cracks, or restorations observed. The glaze remains vibrant and well preserved, and the vase displays exceptionally well. Please refer to the photographs.
