A Scheurich handled floor vase, West Germany, circa 1960s–1970s
A striking large-scale Scheurich handled floor vase dating to the 1960s–1970s, exemplifying the bold forms and experimental glazing techniques that made West German ceramics highly influential during the post-war period. Standing an impressive 54cm high, the vase combines strong sculptural presence with richly textured surface decoration, making it an exceptional decorative statement piece.
The vase is of substantial ovoid form with a narrow cylindrical neck and integrated loop handle, drawing inspiration from traditional storage vessels while embracing the expressive design language of mid-century ceramics. The entire surface is covered in a dramatic textured glaze, with cascading white and cream lava-like deposits flowing over a dark brown ground. This heavily modelled finish creates remarkable depth and tactile appeal, giving the piece an almost organic, volcanic appearance.
Produced by Scheurich Keramik, one of the most successful and prolific West German pottery manufacturers of the twentieth century, the vase reflects the company's innovative approach to form and glaze during the 1960s and 1970s. Scheurich became internationally recognised for producing bold decorative ceramics that combined sculptural silhouettes with highly experimental surface treatments, many of which have become icons of the West German pottery movement.
Particularly attractive is the contrast between the dark underlying body and the lighter textured glaze, which accentuates the relief decoration and creates a strong visual rhythm across the surface. The generous scale and distinctive handle further enhance the vase's architectural quality, allowing it to function equally well as a floor-standing sculpture or as a vessel for large-scale floral displays.
Today, Scheurich ceramics remain highly sought after by collectors of mid-century design, appreciated for their distinctive aesthetic, technical innovation, and enduring decorative appeal. This example is a particularly successful model, combining impressive scale, dramatic texture, and classic West German styling.
Condition is excellent overall, with no chips, cracks, or restorations observed. The textured glaze remains exceptionally well preserved, and the vase displays beautifully. Please refer to the photographs.
