Two fragments from a Kuba ncák ceremonial raffia textile, Democratic Republic of the Congo, early 20th century
A pair of finely worked raffia textile fragments by the Kuba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, most likely originating from an ncák ceremonial wrapper, dating from the early 20th century.
Constructed from joined panels of handwoven raffia fibre, each section is decorated with an exceptionally subtle arrangement of linear and geometric motifs worked tonally across the dark brown ground. The compositions incorporate intersecting lines, cross-hatching, chevrons and angular geometric forms, creating a complex pattern that becomes increasingly apparent on closer inspection.
Ncák textiles formed part of the elaborate ceremonial dress traditions of the Kuba and were constructed from multiple woven raffia panels, frequently embellished using a variety of embroidery, appliqué and related decorative techniques.
The two surviving fragments are presented together, mounted against a pale ground and framed behind glass.
Condition: good antique condition with wear consistent with age and traditional use, including irregular edges, creasing, minor losses, small holes and variations to the surface and colour. Presented mounted and framed. Please refer to photographs.
Dimensions: 102cm wide, 108cm high, 5cm deep
