An iconic ‘Tensegrity 713’ dining table designed by American architect and designer Theodore Waddell for Cassina, Italy, circa 1973.

The sculptural base is constructed from polished chrome-plated tubular steel struts connected by a complex network of tensioned steel cables, creating the distinctive tensegrity structure for which the design is known. The apparently floating and intersecting elements form a remarkably light yet architectural support for the circular clear glass top.

Waddell’s design explores the principle of tensegrity — a structural system in which rigid elements are held in equilibrium through continuous tension — resulting in a table that appears almost weightless despite its substantial proportions.

A particularly striking example of experimental Italian furniture design of the 1970s, combining engineering, sculpture and function.

Condition: in good vintage condition with wear and marks consistent with age and use, including light surface wear to the chrome and glass. Please refer to photographs.
