A mahogany and brass jardinière, England, circa 1900
An attractive late Victorian or Edwardian mahogany jardinière or planter, dating from circa 1900.
Of oval form, the deep wooden body is constructed in sections and bound by two broad brass bands, giving the piece the appearance of a small coopered tub. Each side is fitted with a decorative brass lion-mask handle suspending a substantial ring pull.
The jardinière is raised on four gently outswept legs, giving it an elegant and well-proportioned appearance. The warm mahogany, aged brass and restrained classical detailing are typical of English decorative furniture around the turn of the 20th century.
Originally intended to hold a potted plant or floral arrangement, it would work equally well today as a planter, bottle cooler or decorative occasional piece.
Condition: in good antique condition with wear, marks and patination consistent with age and use. Please refer to photographs.
