An unusual and highly decorative lacquered coffee table, designed and handmade in Hong Kong by Wyndham-Smith Ltd., circa 1970.
The rectangular top is conceived in a stylised interpretation of traditional Chinese furniture, with gently upturned, scroll-like ends. It is supported on a substantial architectural pedestal base, giving the table a striking sculptural profile.
The entire piece is finished in a deep, highly polished dark lacquer and richly decorated with lotus flowers, buds and broad leaves in warm shades of ochre, yellow, orange and green. The botanical decoration extends across both the top and base, creating an attractive continuous composition reminiscent of a lotus pond. The traditional Chinese-inspired subject matter contrasts particularly well with the bold, distinctly mid-century form of the table.
The underside retains its original brass maker's plaque inscribed: “Designed & Hand Made in Hong Kong by Wyndham-Smith Ltd.”
Little appears to have been published about Wyndham-Smith Ltd., but the original labelled provenance firmly identifies the table as Hong Kong manufacture. Its combination of traditional lacquer decoration with a dramatic modern form is characteristic of the sophisticated East-meets-West decorative furniture produced in Hong Kong for an international market during the 1960s and 1970s.
Condition: in good vintage condition with general surface wear, scratches, marks and minor losses to the lacquer consistent with age and use. Please refer to photographs.
