A mid-century cocktail cabinet, England, circa 1960
A particularly stylish British mid-century cocktail cabinet dating from circa 1960, with a distinctly glamorous, Space Age-inspired appearance.
The cabinet is of rectangular form with subtly curved sides, raised on slender splayed metal legs with adjustable feet. The top is finished with a grey and white faux-marble laminate, edged with gilt-metal trim, while the exterior combines cream and metallic finishes.
The most striking feature is the pair of sliding glass doors, reverse-decorated with an elaborate geometric design in black, gold and pale blue. The repeated elliptical forms and linear ornament give the cabinet a wonderfully graphic, almost atomic quality typical of the more adventurous British interiors of the late 1950s and early 1960s. The doors open to reveal a mirrored and fitted interior suitable for bottles and glassware.
The combination of faux marble, mirrored surfaces, gilt detailing and abstract glass decoration makes this an especially decorative example of post-war British cocktail furniture and a wonderful period piece for a contemporary interior.
Condition: in good vintage condition with age-related wear, marks and some deterioration to the interior and finishes consistent with age and use. Please refer to photographs.
