A mid-century cocktail cabinet, England, circa 1950s–60s
A stylish British mid-century cocktail cabinet, dating from the 1950s–60s, with a particularly attractive combination of cream laminated cabinetry, grey textured panels and contrasting timber to the reverse.
The rectangular cabinet is arranged with two cupboards flanking a central cocktail compartment, with a pair of drawers above. The central section is enclosed by sliding glass doors decorated with a distinctive geometric design in black and gold, giving the piece a strong period character. The cream laminate is contrasted by grey textured drawer fronts and top, with shaped metal handles throughout.
Raised on a wonderfully architectural black tubular-steel base with splayed legs and brass-coloured details and feet, the cabinet has the light, almost floating appearance characteristic of British post-war furniture.
The combination of cream laminate, textured grey surfaces, graphic glass decoration and contrasting timber back is particularly evocative of British cocktail furniture of the 1950s and early 1960s, when manufacturers embraced new materials and optimistic modernist styling for furniture designed around home entertaining.
Condition: in good vintage condition with general wear, marks and rubbing consistent with age and use. Some minor wear and oxidation to the metalwork and fittings, together with surface marks to the cabinet commensurate with age. The laminate has slightly moved to one corner.
