Collection of three convex mirrors, England, mid 20th century

£695.00

A collection of three mid 20th century convex mirrors in carved wood and plaster, inspired by the classic Regency “butler’s mirror” tradition. With their circular forms, gilt finishes, and gently protruding mirrored plates, these decorative wall mirrors evoke the refined elegance of early 19th century English interiors while reflecting the enduring popularity of the convex mirror in later decorative arts.

Convex mirrors played an important role in the Regency household. Often positioned within dining rooms or entrance halls, they allowed servants and butlers to discreetly observe the movement of guests and the progress of supper from a distance. Their wide reflective angle provided a practical means of supervision while preserving the formality and etiquette of the period. For this reason, convex mirrors became widely known as “butler’s mirrors.”

This collection displays a pleasing variety of moulded gilt frames, each with subtle differences in ornamentation and profile. Decorative details include ball-moulded borders, reeded surrounds, and ebonised slip interiors, all characteristic of Regency revival design popular during the mid 20th century. The convex plates create softly distorted reflections that add depth, light, and visual interest to an interior.

Executed in wood and plaster with gilt finishes, the mirrors possess a warm aged patina that complements both traditional and eclectic interiors. Grouped together, they form an attractive decorative arrangement, though they may equally be displayed individually throughout a home.

An elegant and atmospheric collection of Regency-style convex mirrors, valued for their decorative appeal, historical associations, and timeless versatility in interior decoration.

Condition: good vintage condition overall with age-related wear consistent with use. Minor losses, rubbing, and surface wear to the gilt finishes and frames. Mirror plates show light foxing, marks, and surface wear commensurate with age. Please refer to photographs.
