A wonderfully decorative Italian floor lamp dating from the 1970s, conceived as an elaborate flowering plant and combining painted toleware with delicate glass elements.

Rising from a moulded gilt circular base, the lamp is formed as a tall arrangement of sinuous green stems surrounded by individually modelled leaves and flowers. Three long, gracefully curving stems terminate in bell-shaped white glass shades with delicately flared rims, while smaller flower heads are distributed amongst the foliage below.

The lower section is particularly richly decorated, with layers of variegated leaves creating the appearance of a planted arrangement before the three principal stems rise dramatically above. Gilt details throughout provide an attractive contrast to the green-painted foliage and white glass.

Floral and botanical lighting of this type became particularly fashionable in Italy during the 1960s and 1970s, combining the tradition of decorative Florentine toleware with the more whimsical and sculptural approach to interiors characteristic of the period. At almost life-size in conception, this example works as much as a decorative sculpture as it does a functional floor lamp.

Condition: in good vintage condition with wear, marks and some losses to the painted and gilt finishes consistent with age and use. Please refer to photographs.
