A striking pair of ‘Bourgie’ table lamps, designed by Ferruccio Laviani for Kartell in 2004.
One of Kartell’s most recognisable contemporary designs, the Bourgie lamp playfully reinterprets the traditional Baroque table lamp through the use of moulded transparent polycarbonate. Each elaborate base is composed of interlocking decorative elements with scrolling feet and an ornate silhouette, while the pleated-effect shade is also formed in polycarbonate, creating the appearance of a conventional fabric shade entirely in a modern material.
The design deliberately combines classical ornament with contemporary manufacturing, transforming the familiar Baroque lamp into a witty and highly sculptural piece of modern Italian design. The reflective gold finish of this pair further emphasises the elaborate profiles and gives the lamps a particularly glamorous appearance when illuminated.
Designed by Ferruccio Laviani for Kartell in 2004, the Bourgie has become an enduring and immediately recognisable Kartell design, remaining closely associated with the playful approach to historic forms that characterised Italian design at the beginning of the 21st century.
