A wicker porter’s chair, Yugoslavia, circa 1970
A wonderfully sculptural wicker porter’s chair, made in Yugoslavia and dating from circa 1970.
Entirely constructed from woven wicker, the chair has a tall domed hood enclosing the seat and extending around the sides to create the distinctive cocoon-like form traditionally associated with porter’s chairs. The closely woven body is supported on a broad, slightly flared base, while the open front and high arched canopy give the piece a particularly striking architectural silhouette.
Porter’s chairs originated as enclosed seats for doormen and hall porters, with their high backs and protective hoods intended to shelter the sitter from draughts in the entrance halls of large houses. This later 20th-century interpretation transforms the traditional form into a lighter and more informal piece through the use of natural wicker.
Stamped “Made in Yugoslavia” to the underside.
Condition: in good vintage condition with wear, marks and minor variations to the wicker consistent with age and use. Please refer to photographs.
