A Victorian leather drop-arm sofa, England, late 19th century
A handsome English Victorian drop-arm sofa dating from the late 19th century, upholstered in beautifully aged tan-brown leather with a rich and characterful patina.
Of generous proportions, the sofa features a deep upholstered seat, low back and distinctive generously scrolled arms. One arm can be lowered to create an extended daybed or chaise-longue arrangement, a practical feature found on some of the more unusual Victorian sofas of the period.
The leather upholstery is finished with traditional close-nailing along the sides and lower edge, while the sofa is raised on short turned and carved wooden legs terminating in brass castors. The combination of its low profile, substantial scroll arms and time-worn leather gives the piece a wonderfully relaxed country-house appearance.
Condition: in good antique condition with considerable wear, marks, creasing, scuffs and variations in colour to the leather, all consistent with age and use and contributing to its attractive patina. Please refer to photographs.
