An Eames "Soft Pad" chair EA217 in black leather by Charles and Ray Eames for ICF, late 20th century
A classic EA217 Soft Pad Chair, one of the most recognisable designs by Charles and Ray Eames, originally introduced in 1969 as an evolution of their earlier Aluminium Group seating. This model, the EA217, is the management-height version with armrests and a swivel base, designed for both office and executive environments.
The chair features three plush, horizontally aligned leather cushions (seat, mid-back, and headrest) upholstered in black leather. These “soft pads” provide enhanced comfort compared to the earlier taut-sling Aluminium Group chairs, while maintaining the same refined, architectural silhouette. The leather shows a gentle sheen and natural patina, highlighting its quality and use over time.
The frame is constructed from cast aluminium with a brushed/satin finish, forming continuous armrests that flow seamlessly into the seat structure, an iconic Eames design gesture. The chair is supported by a four-star aluminium swivel base with a central column, incorporating height adjustment and tilt functionality typical of the EA217 model.
The underside label (visible in the images) indicates manufacture by ICF, an authorised European producer of Eames designs, confirming its authenticity within licensed production.
A highly sought-after mid-century modern design, the EA217 Soft Pad Chair combines ergonomic comfort with timeless aesthetics, making it equally suited to office, studio, or residential interiors.
Condition: good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. The leather exhibits creasing, light surface marks, and patina. The aluminium frame shows minor scuffs and signs of use. Mechanism appears intact and structurally sound.
Dimensions: 80cm high (lowest setting) up to 91cm high (highest setting), 56cm wide, 56cm deep; seat height 43cm (lowest setting), up to 54cm (highest setting).
