A red Murano glass vase, Italy, late 20th century
A striking Murano glass vase dating to the late 20th century, demonstrating the exceptional artistry and technical innovation associated with the renowned glassmakers of Venice. Richly decorated and visually complex, the vase combines traditional Venetian techniques with a bold contemporary aesthetic.
The baluster-form body is executed in vibrant shades of red and orange, densely decorated with intricate millefiori canes that create a richly textured surface of remarkable depth and detail. Interspersed throughout are larger floral and geometric inclusions, while contrasting white trailing decoration winds dynamically across the body, creating movement and visual rhythm. Further enhancing the composition are shimmering gold leaf inclusions suspended within the glass, catching and reflecting the light to create a luxurious sense of warmth and brilliance.
The slightly flared rim complements the elegant proportions of the vase, while the layered decoration showcases the extraordinary skill required to manipulate and fuse the various glass elements during production. The combination of vivid colour, intricate patterning, gold leaf decoration, and sculptural form makes this an impressive decorative object from any angle.
Celebrating the centuries-old traditions of Murano glassmaking while embracing the expressive style of late twentieth-century studio glass, the vase serves as both a functional vessel and a highly decorative work of art.
