An art glass vase, France, circa 1880–1910
A highly decorative French art glass vase dating from the late nineteenth to the early twentieth century, executed in the elegant Art Nouveau taste. Combining organic ornament with refined craftsmanship, the vase reflects the flourishing decorative arts movement that swept through France during this period.
The tapered cylindrical body is formed in smoky olive-grey glass and richly decorated with an intricate pattern of scrolling white foliate motifs. The fluid arabesque decoration wraps continuously around the surface, creating a sense of movement and rhythm characteristic of Art Nouveau design. The striking contrast between the pale decoration and the darker ground enhances the visual depth of the piece while showcasing the technical skill involved in its production.
The vase displays many of the stylistic qualities associated with French decorative glass and ceramics produced during the period, bearing similarities to wares manufactured by celebrated firms such as Sarreguemines, Longwy, and a number of smaller French art pottery and decorative glass workshops active around the turn of the twentieth century. While a definitive attribution remains uncertain, the piece is firmly rooted within this rich artistic tradition.
Elegant in both form and decoration, the vase works equally well as a functional vessel or as a decorative object, embodying the naturalistic aesthetic and sophisticated ornamentation that defined the Art Nouveau movement.
