A silver-plated and cut crystal tantalus, England, circa 1930
An elegant English silver-plated tantalus dating from circa 1930, fitted with three matching cut crystal spirit decanters.
The substantial silver-plated frame is of architectural form, with a stepped rectangular base and carrying handle above. The three square-section crystal decanters are finely cut with geometric decoration and retain their large faceted crystal stoppers. A locking mechanism to the side secures the decanters within the frame, retaining its original key.
Traditionally, a tantalus was designed to allow the contents to remain visible while preventing access to the decanters without unlocking the mechanism. A particularly handsome example of early 20th-century English barware, combining decorative appeal with practical function.
