A Murano glass vase, Italy, late 20th century
A highly expressive Murano glass vase dating to the late 20th century, showcasing the sculptural creativity and vibrant colour palette for which Venetian glassmakers are internationally renowned. Bold in form and rich in visual movement, the vase exemplifies the artistic freedom that characterised much contemporary Murano production during the period.
The body is formed with a swollen baluster shape rising to an undulating freeform rim, creating a dynamic silhouette that appears almost fluid in its execution. The surface is decorated with dramatic swirls of ivory, green, amber, blue, and pink glass, blended and folded together to produce a painterly composition reminiscent of abstract expressionist art. The flowing colours are further enlivened by scattered coloured inclusions throughout the body, adding depth and visual complexity.
Particularly striking is the sculptural treatment of the rim, where the glass rises and folds organically, creating a sense of movement and spontaneity. The combination of vibrant colour, asymmetrical form, and layered decoration demonstrates the technical skill required to manipulate molten glass while retaining such a balanced and harmonious composition.
Both decorative and sculptural, the vase functions as a statement piece in its own right, reflecting the innovative spirit of late twentieth-century Murano glassmaking while remaining firmly rooted in the island's centuries-old traditions of craftsmanship and artistry.
Condition is good overall, with no apparent chips, cracks, or restorations visible under normal inspection. Minor surface wear commensurate with age and handling may be present. Please refer to the photographs.
